MonoRail Select
MonoRail Select is a collection of the best of all the MonoRail. It starts with the dominant Tech Lighting transformer and rail platform. Glassmakers in Italy, Spain and the mountains of the Pacific Northwest then supply premium glass, which Lightology mounts on technically precise hardware. With MonoRail Select, you no longer have to sacrifice design or quality because Lightology has assembled the industry's best into a single super-system.

MonoRail Select
MonoRail Select offers all the function and flexibility of a track lighting system without sacrificing form. The rail is hand-bendable, so you can create the ideal shape to enhance and illuminate any room or follow any architectural detail. You can deliver light just about anywhere, no matter where your junction box is located. By adding pendants, small stylish heads, or functional art pieces, you can truly design with light, delivering the amount of light you want and need from fixtures that are both technically precise and highly aesthetic. MonoRail uses small-low voltage halogen lamps that have a powerful whiter light over standard incandescent bulbs at about a 33% energy savings.

MonoRail Select Kits
Kits are the easiest way to order MonoRail and will come with everything you need for basic Transformer/Rail installations. You can then select from hundreds of fixtures that range from pendants and small stylish heads to functional art pieces. These kits were designed to handle simple runs from 8 to 32 ft., with up to twelve 50 watt fixtures or thirty 20 watt fixtures. If you have a larger or more complicated installation, or would prefer us to do the layout, please contact us at info@lightology.com; you can email us your drawings or fax us at 773-883-6131 and one of our qualified lighting consultants will contact you and lay out your system for you.

You may choose a kit if:

  • Your system is no longer than 32' and no lower than 2' from the ceiling.
  • Your surface transformer or canopy (for remote transformers) will be ceiling mounted.
  • The system is 12 volts and no more than 600 watts.

Each MonoRail kit includes:

  • One 120 Voltage to 12 Voltage surface mount or remote transformer with canopy.
  • 1 or 2 eight foot sections of MonoRail.
  • 2 pairs of end caps.
  • 2 or 5 standoffs from 2-5 inches depending on the transformer.

Basic Instructions

  1. Select a transformer kit (Surface or Remote) 150, 300, or 600 watts.
  2. Customize your kit if desired.
  3. Select your fixtures without exceeding the transformer wattage rating.

#1 Selecting a Transformer
The transformer is the key to a low-voltage system. It reduces a standard 120 Voltage line down to 12 volts, which is safe to touch. The total output wattage of the transformers determines the total wattage of the heads or pendants that can be used on the system. For example, a 300 watt transformer can power up to six 50 watt heads (6 x 50 = 300), 8 fixtures with 37 watt bulbs, 15 fixtures with 20 watt bulbs, or any combination in between.

There are several transformer options from which to choose. Knowing the advantages of each will help you to select the best transformer for your application.

Remote
Generally for new or remodel construction, remote transformers are preferred for their clean looks. They are mounted in accessible locations, out of view (closet, cabinet, or basement). Power is wired to the rail through electrical conduit (pipe) to a junction box on the ceiling where a power feed canopy is installed. Installation instructions

VS
Surface
Surface transformers are decorative and will be visible in the room. They are best suited for applications where there is an existing electrical junction box in a finished ceiling. You can easily replace an existing fixture with a MonoRail system. For example, you can take down your dining room chandelier and replace it with a series of glass pendants and small accent lights for art or other features you would like to highlight, all without changing any of your existing wiring. The rail must be installed so it runs directly beneath the junction box or right next to it. However, you can bend the rail so that you can put the light where you want it.

VS

Magnetic
Magnetic transformers have historically been the choice of lighting professionals due to their reliability and built-in debuzzing coil. We offer a wide range of output wattages for magnetic transformers. When dimming a magnetic transformer, it is important to use a low-voltage magnetic dimmer.

VS
Electronic
Electronic transformers, although relatively new to the marketplace, have performed extremely well but are limited to only 300 watts. They are also susceptible to heat, so they must have good ventilation.

Electronic transformers are much smaller and lighter than their magnetic counterparts. We offer 12 Voltage electronic remote and surface transformers with 300 watt outputs. When dimming an electronic transformer, it is important to use a low-voltage electronic dimmer.

#1a Customize your Kit

MonoRail Drop Kit option
You can lower your MonoRail run farther down from the ceiling.
Drop kit options includes:

  • 1 power extender
  • 2 standoff adapters, available in 6, 12 and 24 inch drops.

You can field cut the stems to your desired drop if you wish.

MonoRail Extender Kit option
You can extend the length of your system by 8 or 16 feet rail.
Extender Kit option Includes:

  • 1 or 2 eight foot piece of MonoRail
  • connector(s)
  • 3 or 6 standoff adapters, available in 6, 12 and 24 inch drops.

You can add up to 2 extender kits for each kit that you purchase for a total MonoRail run of 32 feet for 600 watt kits and 24 feet for 150 or 300 watt kits. Remember the rail is hand-bendable and field-cuttable to create any shape.

#2 Choose your fixtures.

Select the pendants, heads or functional art pieces that you want to put on your system. Be careful not to overload the total rated wattage of the transformer you have selected. You may use a lower wattage lamp (light bulb) than is the rated maximum for a fixture, so for example on a 300 watt transformer, you can put 4 fixtures with 75 watt lamps, 6 fixtures with 50 watt lamps, energy saving, 8 fixtures with 37 watt energy saving lamps, 15 fixtures with 20 watt lamps, or any combination in between.

Decide what wattage you want to use in each fixture.

Add up the total wattage and install. You can find a list of licensed electricians under Resources. These electricians have been recommended to us by our customers because they have successfully installed MonoRail many times. Lightology makes no money from the electricians and will not be responsible for their work. If they do not perform to your standards please let us know and we will take them off the list.

All orders will be checked for accuracy and to make sure you have all the correct lamps (light bulbs) and parts.

If you have a larger or more complicated installation, or would prefer us to do the layout, please contact us at info@lightology.com, email us your drawings or fax us at 773-883-6131 and one of our qualified lighting consultants will contact you and lay out your system for you.
