What is Monorail?
Monorail offers all the function and flexibility of a track lighting system without sacrificing form. The rail is hand-bendable, so you can create the ideal shape to enhance and illuminate any room or follow any architectural detail. You can deliver light just about anywhere, no matter where your junction box is located. By adding pendants, small stylish heads, or functional art pieces, you can truly design with light, delivering the amount of light you want and need from fixtures that are both technically precise and highly aesthetic. Monorail uses small-low voltage halogen lamps that have a powerful whiter light over standard incandescent bulbs at about a 33% energy savings.

Edge Lighting Monorail Kits
Kits are the easiest way to order Monorail and will come with everything you need for basic Transformer/Rail installations. You can then select from hundreds of fixtures that range from pendants and small stylish heads to functional art pieces. These kits were designed to handle simple runs from 8 to 28 feet, with up to twelve 50 watt fixtures or thirty 20 watt fixtures. Is a Monorail Kit Right For Me?
- Your system is no longer than 28' and no lower than 24" from the ceiling.
- Your surface transformer or canopy (for remote transformers) will be ceiling mounted.
- The system is 12 volts and no more than 600 watts.
Each Monorail kit includes:
- One 120 Voltage to 12 Voltage surface mount or remote transformer with canopy.
- Monorail.
- 2 pairs of end caps.
- Standoffs - 1 standoff for approximately every 3ft of rail.

Basic Instructions:
- Select a transformer kit (Surface or Remote) 150, 300, or 600 watts.
- Customize your kit if desired. Select your length and drop from the ceiling.
- Select your fixtures without exceeding the transformer wattage rating.
1. Selecting a Transformer
The transformer is the key to a low-voltage system. It reduces a standard 120 Voltage line down to 12 volts, which is safe to touch. The total output wattage of the transformers determines the total wattage of the heads or pendants that can be used on the system. For example, a 300 watt transformer can power up to six 50 watt heads (6 x 50W = 300W), 8 fixtures with 37 watt bulbs, 15 fixtures with 20 watt bulbs, or any combination in between.
Remote vs. Surface Mount:

Remote transformers
 Provide a cleaner look because they are hidden from view. However, they must be installed in an accessible location, such as above the ceiling or in a closet, located up to 20 feet from the system's power feed. Remote transformers feed a Monorail system through an unobtrusive power feed canopy or other power feed options.

Surface mount transformers
 Sit on the ceiling attached to an electrical box and are a visible part of a Monorail system, with the transformer enclosed in a decorative housing matching the system's finish. Surface mount transformers are best suited for systems being installed where there is an existing 4" electrical box within range of the Monorail's run. Rail can be mounted as close as 1 inch with all size transformers.

Magnetic vs. Electronic:

Magnetic transformers
Offer reliability and a wide range of output wattages, but can be prone to buzzing. A debuzzing dimming coil can be used in conjunction with a low voltage dimmer to reduce this possible noise. A fast acting circuit breaker is housed on the transformer which will shut the system off in case of short or overload, and can be easily reset once the short or overload is corrected.

Electronic transformers
Are smaller and lighter than magnetic ones, and can be reset at the wall switch in the event of a short or overload once the short or overload is corrected. They only come in 12 volt and 300 watt.

Both magnetic and electronic transformers can be dimmed, but a compatible dimmer is required for the chosen transformer type.
2. Customize your kit

Kits can be built ranging from 8 to 28 feet in length.
The standard Monorail drops one inch from the ceiling, but system kits can also ordered to lower the rail as much as 24" from the ceiling.

Surface Mount Transformers:
The standard standoff length for Edge Monorail systems is 1 inch. One inch standoffs are compatible with 1 inch power feed canopies and all Monorail surface mount transformers. Ceiling drop lengths are also available in standard 12 and 24 inch sizes. Custom lengths are also available. Please call. Standoffs and power feeds are field-cuttable to get the exact drop from the ceiling desired. Kits include enough standoffs for about every three feet of rail taking into consideration that the power feed or surface mount transformer acts as a support.
3. Select your fixtures
Transformer Wattage
Transformer wattage determines the total wattage of the heads/lamps on the system. You can combine LED and low voltage halogen fixtures on the same system when using 12V AC transformers - just be sure that your total wattage does not exceed the wattage of the transformer.
Select the pendants, heads or functional art pieces that you want to put on your system. Be careful not to overload the total rated wattage of the transformer you have selected. You may use a lower wattage lamp (light bulb) than is the rated maximum for a fixture, so for example on a 300 watt transformer, you can put 4 fixtures with 75 watt lamps, 6 fixtures with 50 watt lamps, energy saving, 8 fixtures with 37 watt energy saving lamps, 15 fixtures with 20 watt lamps, or any combination in between.

Add up the total wattage and install. You can find a list of licensed electricians under Resources. These electricians have been recommended to us by our customers because they have successfully installed Monorail many times. Lightology makes no money from the electricians and will not be responsible for their work. If they do not perform to your standards please let us know and we will take them off the list.
