Derek Porter

Derek Porter is co-owner and Principal Designer of Derek Porter Studio, where he leads philosophical interests, collaborative thinking and detail development for all architectural lighting design, public art and product design related projects.

Parallel to his art and design practice, Derek is instrumental in the evolution of lighting design education and is currently Director of the Master of Fine Arts Lighting Design Program at Parsons The New School for Design in New York. At Parsons, he leads an innovative lighting design program which is globally recognized for daylight and electric lighting integration, cross disciplinary study, social responsibility and broad ranging theoretical research in light, space and human perception.

As an extension of his lighting design practice, Derek studies light and space through work in photography and sculpture. This more personal investigation of light brings opportunity for deeper introspective study and abstract understanding of subtleties found in human perceptionatmospheric conditions and cycles in nature.

Derek is involved with public art commissions as well as actively exhibits his work nationally and internationally. Additionally, his work is held in numerous corporate and private collections. Derek earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Environmental and Product Design from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1989 and attended Helix in Italy, an international study program focused on architecture in 1996.
