Poem by former U.S. Poet Laureate Mark Strand on downtown Chicago billboard

WHO and WHAT: Chicago, IL, Dec. 22, 2003 - A lighting company and a literary organization team up to feature a portion of a poem by Mark Strand on a large billboard in Chicago's River North district.

WHERE: Strand's poetry billboard will be up for at least one month from Dec. 19th outside of Lightology's 20,000 sq ft contemporary lighting showroom at 215 W. Chicago Avenue (at Wells).

WHY: Lightology and the Poetry Center sought to cooperate to use the billboard for an interesting, thoughtful and intelligent message, something that Chicagoans would actually look forward to seeing, rather than just another image in the commercial landscape. The billboard presents a section of Strand's poem that features ideas about light. Strand kindly gave permission to use his work. Lightology and the Poetry Center believe this to be a brilliant message during the holiday season and the darkest part of the year.
