This George Kovacs Jewel Box Bathroom vanity light is beautiful and throws nice shadows. HOWEVER, there appears to be a dangerous design flaw: the wrapping of the cages above each light seems to restrict the airflow enough to cause it to burn from the heat of the bulbs. Everything was installed correctly, and with the original light bulbs supplied with the lamp. I have smoke marks on my ceiling above each one of the five lights (see the picture I added). I notified the manufacturer of this in detail ten days ago and have yet to hear back. I love the look of the light, but have to worry about a potential fire as well as breathing in fumes. Take my experience as a warning.
Lightology's response:
Thanks for your comment. Your experience sounds like a typical issue encountered with halogen lighting and unlikely to be a dangerous fire hazard.
Halogen bulbs get extremely hot when operating, and when they first light up, any dust, oil or grease on the bulbs will literally burn off. This can easily produce smoke. For this reason, it is recommended that you avoid touching the bulbs with your bare hands during installation.
In the photo, it appears as though you mounted the fixture about 6 in or 7 in from the ceiling, which would explain why the smoke marked your ceiling. Mounting the fixture 12 in from the ceiling will prevent this in the future.
Again, it is not uncommon for oils on the bulbs to burn off in this manner. You can prevent future occurrences by wearing gloves whenever handling the bulbs.
That being said, do you see burn marks on the chrome/aluminum wire above the lamp? If not, then there's no problem, and all you have to do is wipe your ceiling down. If so, however, this could indicate an issue warranting further investigation.
