Glamtiques: Biagio Table Lamp

Tobia Scarpa, 1968

Eternally ultramodern, the Biagio Table Lamp is the product of extraordinary vision, painstaking craftsmanship and uncompromising detail.

Born in Venice, Italy on January 1, 1935, Italian designer and architect Tobia Scarpa followed in the footsteps of his father, renowned architect Carlo Scarpa. After earning his architecture degree in 1957, he started working with his wife and long-time collaborator Afra Scarpa. Together, they produced several important furniture and lighting pieces for names such as FLOS, Cassina and Knoll, to name a few.

Honors received over his long and prolific career include the Compasso d'Oro Award in 1969 and The International Forum Design Hanover Award in 1992. His works are part of the permanent collections of many international museums, including New York's MOMA, the MCA in Chicago and London's Victoria and Albert Museum. Tobia Scarpa currently lives and works in Venice, Italy.

Designed in 1968 for FLOS, the Biagio Table Lamp is crafted from a single piece of exquisite Carrara marble. Seamless, elegant and remarkably unique, the geometric shape of this lamp instantly catches the eye in any room.

Biagio produces soft, direct light. The incandescent bulb within brings the translucent marble to glow, revealing the unique natural veins in the meticulously refined stone. It is just as captivating when switched off. The fluid curves in this fundamental material seem reminiscent of ancient fossil shells, giving Biagio a primordial feel.

A favorite since its introduction, the Biagio Table Lamp has lent its dramatic presence to films such as the 1981 James Bond thriller For Your Eyes Only and the second installment of the John Wick series in 2017. Still in production for FLOS today, this timelessly captivating masterpiece is a powerful and distinctive addition to any space.
