Home Tour: Chicago Three-Flat

Chicago, Illinois - Lighting Design by Ashley Rutter

Step inside this historic Lincoln Park home, consciously updated with layers of high-tech lighting and artful antiques without losing its venerable charm.

When renovating their home, which dates back to 1881, owners John and Debbie wanted to incorporate lighting that would highlight their unique artwork and the building's original elements without overwhelming them. The result: a delightful combination of modern and vintage styles that is both warm and welcoming.

The historic foyer features original tilework, lighting and stained glass, plus the stunning staircase. Here, light from the top floor bathes the stairs, spindles and carpet in a gorgeous rose glow. The cozy dining room pairs traditional casegoods and decorations with the elegantly organic Bowie Linear Chandelier by Stone Lighting.

Architectural LED lighting and controls from PureEdge Lighting are incorporated throughout in a clever, purposeful way. Soft Strip creates lines of light to accentuate moldings, ceilings and room contours - without a large footprint. It's possible to create a huge range of effects, from a warm glow to vibrant colors depending on the mood.

To achieve the glow of color all the way down the open staircase, the owners needed an especially powerful lamp. Designer Ashley Rutter went above and beyond to find the Billet Wallgrazer. Our Sales Team is always dedicated to getting the lighting just right - wherever we happen to source it.

For the latest and greatest in colorful smart lighting, Pure Smart from PureEdge Lighting offers the most comprehensive smart lighting solution on the market, harmonizing built-in architectural lighting with retrofit bulbs for your fixtures and recessed cans - all controlled by the top-tier WiZ Pro software.

Modern LED lighting is used in other versatile ways throughout the home. TruLine is plastered into walls and ceilings, illuminating narrow hallways without adding clutter. The versatile Stomp Strip creates a gentle glow inside cabinets, while Light Channel Millwork takes care of the undercabinet, highlighting framed sheet music from one of the homeowners favorite artists.

The home's bathrooms also use Stomp Strip to brighten up these small spaces without adding bulk. The layered lighting approach creates a fully controllable atmosphere - bright for grooming, or soft and dim when bathing - you choose. The sleek, architectural lighting is the perfect complement to the furnishings and decorative fixtures in each space. Rather than feeling mismatched or too modern, it enhances the vintage elements - like the gold ceiling in the powder room.

The home artfully combines vintage-inspired elements with contemporary and very modern pieces. In the primary bedroom, for example, the distinctive original moulding beautifully offsets the jaw-dropping Limbo Chandelier. The design expertly layers ambient, accent and task lighting, providing precisely what is needed for every space.
