Glamtiques: B-4 Table Lamp

Greta Magnusson Grossman, 1945

The whimsical B-4 Table Lamp is one of the iconic objects created by Greta Magnusson Grossman - a visionary Swedish architect and designer who made a lasting impact in the male-dominated world of midcentury modern design.

Born in Sweden in 1906, Greta Magnusson Grossman helped revolutionize mid-20th century furniture, interior design and architecture. She played a major role in bringing European modernism and other trends to North America following World War II. After attending the prestigious Stockholm Art Institution in Konstfack and Royal Academy of Technology, she founded a successful design studio, called Studio. She was the first woman to win the Furniture Design Award from the Swedish Society of Industrial Design in 1933.

As war swept Europe in 1940, she and her husband decided to relocate to Los Angeles, California. Grossman opened her second studio on Rodeo Drive, attracting celebrity Hollywood clients with her modern Scandinavian furniture and lighting. She also started working in architecture at this time, incorporating principles of modern European design to imagine a distinctively southern California style.

Designed by Grossman in 1945, the modernist B-4 Table Lamp is a playful take on her strong signature aesthetic. Triangular panels in alternating colors top a stilt base, reminiscent of her architectural work: She designed a series of homes built on stilts along the southern Californian coastline, featuring glass walls and cantilevered decks.

Eye-catching and elegant in its geometry, the B-4 Table Lamp still makes a strikingly modern statement in all types of spaces. It is available in White with Black, Chianti Red, French Blue or Italian Green accent panels. In addition to the B-4, Gubi offers an entire collection of Grossman lamps and furnishings - including her beloved Grashoppa Lamp and Cobra Lamp.
