Glamtiques: Fontana 1853

Max Ingrand, 1954

One of the greatest stained glass artists of the 20th century, Max Ingrand devoted his glassmaking expertise to create one of FontanaArte's most iconic light fixtures: the Fontana 1853, also simply known as the Fontana Table Lamp.

Max Ingrand was born in Bressuire, France in 1908. Fascinated by the art of stained glass, he attended the School of Fine Arts in Paris as well as the School of Decorative Arts, where he learned from master glassmaker Jacques Gruber. Ingrand founded his own glass workshop in 1931, where he explored transparency and light with stained glass. He became a well-known master glass worker and decorator, winning major commissions to create decorative glass for hundreds of churches, hotels and public projects around the world.

Max Ingrand's interest in light and glass led him to start designing light fixtures. He became artistic director of FontanaArte in 1954, creating several design classics that became bestsellers for the company. He left FontanaArte in 1967 to found Verre Lumiere, a pioneer in halogen lamps. He was awarded the French Legion of Honor for his impressive work before his death in 1969.

Originally named 1853 and later Fontana as a tribute to the company Ingrand shaped for over a decade, this minimalist lamp has become the quintessential lamp form. Unique to this lamp are its multiple light sources in both the base and glass lamp shade. These create different kinds of light for a variety of purposes - a gentle glow can create a relaxing ambience, or a focused beam of light is ideal for work or reading. Available in three sizes, the Fontana Large Lamp has a triple light control that makes it possible to illuminate the painted metal base, glass shade and body individually.

The Fontana 1853 Table Lamp comes in a variety of colors and finishes, as well as with LED lights. Versatile and timeless, it is the perfect complement for every space and style.
