Fortuny Floor Lamp

Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, 1903

Designed by Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo at the beginning of the 20th century, the striking Fortuny floor lamp is a timeless classic. Effortlessly elegant and always modern, it makes a striking statement in every decade and location.

Born in Granada, Spain in 1871, Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo lived most of his life in Venice. Known primarily for his work in textile and fashion design, Fortuny was also a painter, engraver, architect, photographer, set designer, lighting technician, inventor and impresario - a true original. He was especially interested in the properties of light and how it could be used to create dramatic effects.

Fortuny's lamp designs reflect his design principles and personal interests. Designed for use as a stage lamp, the Fortuny Modalamp elegantly shows his approach of reflecting diffuse light off of a concave surface. Patented in 1903 and launched in 1907, this lamp is amazingly contemporary. Functional and streamlined, the design is inherently honest without any unnecessary accents that would detract from its simple perfection.

The Fortuny floor lamp is an excellent example of early modernist design, showcasing industrial materials and functional style. Like a modern sculpture, the lamp has a compelling presence. The titanium-finished central stem and tripod legs are adjustable, making it a versatile lighting solution for all types of purposes. The shade rotates and tilts, helping the incandescent bulb cast warm, soft light on its immediate surroundings. It is available in multiple colors and finishes to enhance practically every type of space.
