      About Frédéric Sofia

Because design is first and foremost about a story, a function. Because every project is a unique perspective and an opening to the world, Frederic Sofia has swung with the design since setting up his first self-publishing company Wombat in 1994.

Born in Lyon in 1967, graduated from the University of Technology in Mechanical Engineering with a degree in marketing, the designer now based in Paris approaches his discipline through close contacts in industry and the wider economy.

From his self-taught journey coupled with an unalterable desire to build lasting partnerships, Frederic Sofia continues to practice with deepness, driven by this insatiable need to feel useful rather than a need to be vaunted. Whether it is his industrial objects or his works of art (produced in collaboration with Catherine Sofia), the designer roams between the world of objects and contemporary art. This latest, long time seen as a breakaway, allows him to tell stories hitherto impossible to translate into the field of industrial design. Between structural realism and formal aesthetics (Luxembourg Chair designed for Fermob, Solar Streetlight for Oversun), his look at modern society is materialized from critical success to commercial ones.

Since the creation of his studio in 2000, Frederic Sofia's approach gives birth to a galaxy of sensitive and realistic projects, nourished by a constant research for improvement, with the goal of embellishing daily life, taking into account the inventory of uses while bringing sense and emotion. Frederic Sofia questions, hijacks and reinvents, without ever neglecting to make the link between his mission and that of the industry to which he addresses himself. Always guarantor of stories written on the long term and deeply animated by this urgency to change things through objects, and for a better world.
