Designed by Jamie McLellan, the Spar Collection by Resident takes its structural inspiration from the mast and rigging arrangements of classic sailing boats. The original Spar Floor Light uses a large cantilevered steel and spun aluminum structure supported by a tensioned electrical cable, creating a striking two-dimensional silhouette with considerable reach. Its spun aluminum shade rotates to direct illumination where needed, allowing the sculptural floor lamp to provide functional light over a lounge chair, sofa or table without requiring a ceiling-mounted fixture. The Spar concept also extends to the smaller Spar Junior, which translates the same distinctive geometry into a table light with an adjustable shade. As one of Resident's earliest designs, Spar established many of the qualities associated with the New Zealand brand: purposeful engineering, graphic form and a restrained use of materials.
