Foyer & Entryway

An entryway or foyer is a transitional space that welcomes you from the outside world into the comforts of home. Proper entryway lighting sets the tone as you come home to unwind after a day of work or as you greet your guests to join you for the evening. There are a number of ways to create a warm, inviting entrance that speaks to the character of your home.

Choosing the Best Foyer and Entry Room Lighting

The best entry lighting utilizes a "layered" approach, combining three types of illumination: Ambient, Task, and Accent.

Ambient Lighting (General Illumination): This is the main light source for the room. Popular fixtures include:

Task Lighting (Functional Light): This light is focused on an area for an activity (e.g., finding keys, sorting mail).

  • Table Lamps: Placed on a console table, they add a warm, functional glow.

Accent Lighting (Focus & Ambiance): Used to highlight architectural features, artwork, or mirrors, adding depth to the space.

  • Wall Sconces: Placed symmetrically around a mirror or art piece, they add a decorative layer of mid-level light and create focal points.

Foyer Lighting Sizing and Placement Rule

Selecting the correct size and hanging height for your main fixture ensures safety, proportion, and visual balance.

Determining Fixture Width (Diameter):

  • Calculation: Add the length and width of the foyer (measured in feet). The sum is the approximate diameter for your light fixture (in inches).
    • (Example: A 10 ft×12 ft foyer needs a fixture approximately 22 inches wide).

Determining Fixture Height:

  • Rule: For every foot of ceiling height, allow 2.5 to 3 inches for the height of the fixture.
    • (Example: A 10-foot ceiling is best suited for a chandelier that is 25 to 30 inches tall).

Minimum Hanging Clearance:

  • Single-Story Foyer: The bottom of the chandelier or pendant must be at least 7 feet (84 inches) above the finished floor to allow for comfortable passage.
  • Two-Story Foyer: The bottom of the fixture should be hung roughly level with the second-floor landing or balcony for the best visual effect.

Brightness and Color Temperature:

  • Brightness (Lumens): Aim for 400 to 1000 lumens for the entire entryway.
  • Ambiance: Use Warm White (2700K - 3000K) bulbs to create a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. Install dimmer switches for flexibility in adjusting the light level.
