Single Pole, 3-Way, Multi-Location Dimmers

Single-Pole Dimmers provide control from one location.
3-Way Dimmer with Switches - 3-way dimmer adjust the light level from one location. When used with 3-way and 4-way switches, the lights can be turned on to dimmer level or off from many locations.
Multi-Location Control from Each Location - multi-location dimmers can be used with accessory dimmers for full control of the lights from up to 10 locations.
Note: Only certain dimmers allow the ability to dim from more than one location—example: Maestro or Faedra. With other dimmers, you can only dim from one location and have an on/off switch at the other location.

Ganging and Derating

A typical dimmer is wider than a switch. This increased size helps the dimmer dissipate the internal heat normal to operation. Dimmers can be ganged together such that the space between them is the same as for switches. To do this, a portion of the fins (heat sink) must be removed. The fins are grooved to make the removal of fins easy with a pair of pliers. The removal of these fins reduces the capacity (load) the dimmer can control.

Can I use a 3-way dimmer in the 4-way switch location?

No. 3-way dimmers may only be located in either of the 3-way switch positions.

Can I use a standard 3-way switch with a multi-location dimmer?

No. Multi-location dimmers do use standard 3-way wiring, but make use of one wire for communications while the other carries the load current. A 3-way switch is not compatible with this configuration.

Can I use a 3-way dimmer in the 4-way switch location?
- - In a traditional setup, you can only have one dimmer switch, and it must replace one of the 3-way switches at either end of the circuit. The 4-way switch(es) in the middle are only used to toggle between the traveler wires and cannot be replaced with a dimmer, as 4-way dimmer switches do not exist for conventional wiring. However, some smart dimming systems, like Lutron Maestro, may allow you to install the dimmer in the 4-way position due to their unique wiring configuration, although the 3-way position is still preferred. Other smart solutions, such as Lutron Caseta, enable you to replace all switches with a main dimmer and wireless remote switches, overcoming the restrictions of traditional multi-way wiring.
Can I use a standard 3-way switch with a multi-location dimmer?
- - Yes, in most cases you can use a standard 3-way switch with a multi-location dimmer switch. The key is to install the multi-location dimmer in one of the 3-way switch positions, either at the line side where power enters the circuit or at the load side where power goes to the light fixture. The other 3-way switch position can use a standard 3-way switch. As long as your multi-location dimmer is compatible with standard 3-way switches, you can use it in combination with a regular 3-way switch. But always check the dimmer's instructions first, as some smart dimmer systems have specific requirements for the companion switch.

How do single-pole, 3-way, and 4-way switches differ?

Can I gang dimmers together and what are the implications on capacity?
- - When you're planning to gang dimmers together, you must ensure that the spacing is equivalent to that of standard switches, as dimmers are typically wider. To do this, you'll need to remove parts of the fins on the dimmer using pliers, but be aware that this action reduces the dimmer's capacity. It's essential to calculate the total load you wish to manage before proceeding to prevent overloading. Additionally, make sure that the dimmers you're pairing are compatible and can handle the combined load.
