Arnold Madsen

Despite a number of iconic designs that have achieved classic status in the modern age, Arnold Madsen (1907 - 1989) is often considered a hidden gem of mid-century Danish Modern design. Unlike many of his contemporaries who trained as architects, furniture designers, or cabinetmakers, Madsen was not formally educated in design. He began his career in 1941 as a furniture upholsterer before opening a workshop with Henry Schubell in 1945, and they produced furniture together until 1965. Madsen's designs are marked by an innovative use of forms and materials, particularly rounded shapes with a light, elegant expression.
