Coastal Design

Also known as nautical, coastal design draws inspiration from the calm, serene ocean views and textures of the beach for a softened take on nature. Sun-bleached driftwoods, smooth stone, pale pastels and a nod to nautical instruments create the coastal vibe we all cherish.

  • What specific IP rating should I look for in outdoor coastal lights to withstand salty air and moisture?

      • Coastal lighting fixtures like string lights, lanterns, wall sconces, pendant lights, and table lamps create a beachy, seaside ambiance ideal for coastal homes, beach houses, and outdoor spaces near the ocean. Common materials used include weather-resistant metals, UV-stabilized plastics, driftwood, seashells, and LED bulbs crafted into nautical, sea-inspired designs evoking images of crashing waves, seascapes, and sunsets over the water. Some signature coastal lighting elements include rope-wrapped lamps, netting motifs, starfish and shell cut-outs, and etched glass accents depicting nautical scenes that add coastal charm. Outdoor fixtures should have an IP65 or IP66 rating to withstand sea spray and salt air. Regular cleaning helps maintain fixtures' corrosion resistance. Overall, coastal lighting aims to transport homeowners and guests to the shore with its fresh, bright coastal elegance and summery, beachfront vibes perfectly suited for coastal living.

  • Are there protective coatings to prevent rust in metal components in seaside environments?

      • Yes, metal components used in seaside environments are typically coated with a protective layer to prevent rusting. Zinc plating is commonly used as it forms a corrosion-resistant barrier between the metal surface and the atmosphere. The zinc coating acts as a sacrificial anode, which means that it will corrode before the base metal it protects. This significantly extends the lifespan of components such as fasteners, fixtures, and frames in coastal conditions.

  • Are there shatterproof or tempered glass shades for added safety in areas with children or pets?

      • Most glass shades used for lighting fixtures are made of tempered glass for safety. Tempered glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. When broken, tempered glass shards tend to break into small, rounded, generally smooth pieces instead of splinters. This makes it less likely to cause injury if the glass is broken. Tempered glass provides an important level of protection, especially for areas where children and pets are present.

  • Can ceiling fans with light kits be controlled with a remote or integrated smart home system?

      • Yes, many ceiling fans come with light kits that can be controlled remotely or integrated into a smart home system. Look for fans that include Zigbee, Bluetooth, or WiFi capabilities which allow control via mobile apps or voice assistants. Some light kits have pull chains for manually turning on or off, as well as separate switches or remotes for wireless operation from anywhere in the room. Integrating fans with a smart hub opens up options for programming schedules and voice commands for convenient lighting control as part of the home automation setup.
