Yes, the opal shade is matte glass and should glow. It is open on the top and the bottom of the shade.

This light fixture arrived defective.. The glass bulbs did not fit over the metal parts and it could not be assembled. I immediately emailed lightology about the problem. It took over 90 days and several emails, photos, a video, etc to get a refund. For several weeks, Lightology made it clear that they were unwilling to give me a refund until the defective fixtures were shipped back and they got approval from the vendor. In turn the vendor made repeated promises to send a return shipping label, but never sent one. If you value your time, do not buy from this website and certainly do not buy anything made by this manufacturer.
