Shop This Designer

Danish designers Ejner Larsen (19171987) and Aksel Bender Madsen (19162000) were key figures of mid-century Danish modernism, known for furniture and lighting defined by sculptural simplicity, fine craftsmanship, and a close attention to how people live. Larsen trained as an upholsterer and Bender Madsen as a cabinetmaker before both studied under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where they adopted his emphasis on honest materials, human scale, and ergonomic form.

After working for leading architects including Arne Jacobsen and Mogens Koch, the pair founded their studio in 1947. Over more than two decades, often in collaboration with master cabinetmaker Willy Beck, they produced around 300 designs, pairing Bender Madsen's precision with Larsen's sense of balance and restraint. Their work was shown at the Milan Triennale and Design in Scandinavia exhibitions and is held by institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Understated by intent, their designs were made to enrich everyday life rather than dominate a room.
