About Poul Henningsen
Poul Henningsen (1894-1967) was a Danish architect and designer who revolutionized the field of lighting design with his innovative and functional creations. His iconic PH lamps, characterized by their layered shades that provide soft, diffused light, remain popular today and are considered masterpieces of Scandinavian design.
Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Henningsen studied architecture at the Danish Royal Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1917. He initially worked as an architect, but his interest in lighting design gradually grew.
In 1924, Henningsen founded the design firm StUB, which specialized in lighting design. He collaborated with several companies, including Louis Poulsen, to create a range of lamps that were both stylish and efficient.
Henningsen believed that good lighting should be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. He was particularly interested in the relationship between light and form, and he spent years experimenting with different shade shapes and materials to create the perfect balance of light distribution and ambiance.
His PH lamps featured multiple layers of shades, designed to direct light downwards and prevent glare. This innovative design not only provided soft, diffused light but also created a sense of intimacy and warmth.
Henningsen's most famous design is the PH 5 lamp, a five-shade pendant lamp that became a symbol of Danish modernism. He also designed a variety of other lamps, including table lamps, floor lamps, and wall lamps.
Henningsen's work was not limited to lighting design. He also designed furniture, textiles, and interiors. He was a key figure in the development of Danish modernism, a style characterized by its clean lines, functional forms, and use of natural materials.
Henningsen's work was recognized with numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. He received the Danish design award, the Lunning Prize, three times between 1955 and 1962. He was also awarded the Eckersberg Medal, Denmark's highest honor for design, in 1967.
Poul Henningsen is considered one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. His work continues to inspire and influence designers today. His PH lamps are still widely used in homes, offices, and public spaces around the world.

Thank you
- Quality: Exceptional
Beautiful with the lights turned off, stunning when illuminated. The brushed metal reflects and spreads the light softly, bathing the whole room in an ethereal glow. It's so soothing.
"Lotus Flower"
- Quality: Exceptional
Gorgeous. Though its really name the Artichoke Suspension, we call it our "Lotus Flower Lamp". My husband and I saw a few chandeliers very similar to this in our hotel in Bali (maybe even the same ones) and I immediately fell in love with the look. There is something so beautiful about the mixture of clean Asian lines and European industrial frill.
Even more beautiful in person
- Quality: Exceptional
When I ordered this, I thought I'd be getting a really nice, modern piece that would look good in our living room and blend well with the decor. I was SO wrong. It doesn't look nice-it looks FANTASTIC!! The first time I turned it on I was totally blown away. These photos simply don't show how beautiful this pendant really is.
