Answer
The 12.5" fixtures backplate is 4 1/4"W x 8"H. The 17.8" fixtures backplate is 4 3/8"W x 6" H.
Can I flip this or is the bottom open so water will get in?

This fixture is open at the bottom, so it would not be a good idea to turn it over.
